I’m putting this over our entry steps and want safer footing without throwing light upward into the night sky—will this down-only 12W cylinder give me usable tread visibility while keeping the façade calm at night?

Yes. It’s down-only with ~850 lm for step visibility and minimal uplight for a dark-sky-friendly look.

Our HOA is strict about glare—does the 12W/850 lm beam look gentle from across the street or through neighbors’ windows?
